Article III. The Holy Spirit
We believe that the Holy Spirit
- is a divine person equal with God the Father (John 14:16-17) and God the Son (Matthew 28:19);
- is of the same nature (Hebrews 9:14; John 14:26; Luke 1:35;
- was active in the creation (Genesis 1:1-3);
- in His relation to the unbelieving world restrains the Evil one until God’s purpose is fulfilled (2 Thess. 2:7);
- convicts of sin, judgment and righteousness (John 16:8-11);
- bears witness to the Truth of the Gospel in preaching and testimony (John 15:26-27; Acts 5:30-32);
- is the agent in the New Birth (John 3:5-6);
- seals, baptizes, endues, guides, teaches, witnesses, sanctifies, and helps the believer (Ephesians 1:13-14; Matt. 3:11; Mark 1:8; Luke 3:16; John 1:33; Acts 11:16; Luke 24:29; John 16:13; John 14:26; Romans 8:14; Romans 8:16; 2 Thess. 2:13; 1 Peter 1:2; Romans 8:26-27; Gal. 5:22-23; Ephesians 5:18-21); and
- shows His indwelling in the believer by the fruit of the Spirit (love, joy, peace, long suffering, gentleness, goodness, faith, meekness and temperance) rather than by speaking in tongues and other spectacular demonstrations.
